Modernist rhythms
Located in the German city of Krefeld,
Haus Lange and the neighbouring
Haus Esters are amongst the earliest
works of Mies van der Rohe. Completed in
1930 and conceived as meticulously
ordered domestic universes for two
industrialists and their families, they
now house temporary exhibitions for the
Kunstmuseen Krefeld, these refined
geometric compositions of lines, grids
and rectilinear mass serving as perfect
counterpoints to the less orderly forms
of the encircling trees and their shadows —
languidly long on an autumn afternoon.
