Partway through renovation of the church of St John-at-Hackney in east London, the interior is experienced as a series of powerful details, physically isolated from one another by the processes of renewal and of surface and spatial clarification. Only when the last of the scaffolding and protective sheeting is removed will the entire composition be visible once more.
