The second phase of work in Montemaggio
concentrates on the monastery, the centrepiece of the project. The
scheme pares away an accumulation of later additions to leave the
central core - essentially a single volume with a stair connecting each
floor. The interior renovation is based on a vernacular palette
of plaster walls and exposed chestnut ceiling timbers, with
Florentine pietra serena used for floors, fireplaces and general
construction purposes and Roman travertine for basins, tubs, benches
and work surfaces.
