Vistas and Portals

The experience of viewing the first of these images is characterised by the sense of through movement. The vistas have the effect of both enclosing and elongating, the path of the eye being given rhythm and momentum by the successive beats variously of stone steps, bands of shadow and the arching structure of a pergola. Circumscribing the field of view, by contrast, can still the way we look. Here the circular portal encourages a more meditative act of visual sifting, between the organic and the geometric, between vertical and horizontal and between the infinite shades of green.
