Unexpected softness

Shuttered concrete is a defining component of Peter Zumthor’s Secular Retreat in South Devon. Rhythmical, raw and speaking uncompromisingly of structure, its inherently rough surfaces acquire a little unexpected softness — from the fall of light and shadow, from proximity to more conventionally sensuous materials and from the double filter of rain running over glass.
