Repetition and attenuation in Paris

Walking around the 1st arrondissement, some of the most memorable views are elegant exercises in perspective: exhilaratingly attenuated vistas that serve as the perfect medium for graphic effects of light and shadow. In one particularly striking example here, the repetition of the manmade columns continues in the rhythmic beats of an avenue of trees that graphically frames a slender blade of sky. As time passes, the eye becomes increasingly sensitive to open and closed lines of sight, as the significance of the spaces between things also acquires heightened charge.
