John Pawson
Wakaba Restaurant
Kieko and Minoru Yoshihara
London 1987

Fronting a busy street in north London, Wakaba's facade is a single curved wall of translucent, acid-etched glass: both a sign and a filter protecting the tranquility of the interior.

Inside there is little to detract from the business of eating. Coats are concealed behind full height, openable screens which are lit from behind at night, while sushi utensils are kept behind lacquered doors. Order is imposed on the seating layout by means of low screen walls which define distinct areas. Tables, chairs and the floor are constructed of white oiled beechwood.
