John Pawson
van Royen Apartment
Hester van Royen
London 1986

This early apartment for the contemporary art dealier Hester van Royen is articulated around an open space of hall, corridor and kitchen. A polished black floor appears to flow like water throughout, unifying the different territories of the apartment.

The two main living areas are linked by a pair of openings. The depth of the intervening wall is visible in the hollowed square of the fireplace and physically experienced as one passes between the spaces.
