John Pawson
House Germany
2003

Strategies for building on a sloped site fall into two main categories. The architect may choose to cancel out the effect of the slope - through the construction of a podium, through excavation, or by setting the structure on stilts. The design for a private house in Germany adopts another, gentler strategy, following the slope and making it a defining characteristic of the architecture.

Nature shapes more than the contours of this house. Extensive glazed panels on the garden side frame woodland views which become part of the interior, while a glass cantilevered section in the main bedroom gives a sense of being out amongst the treetops.
